Bangkok Nightlife

Sukhumvit Road - along it, and its many adjoining sois, are countless pubs and bars, many of them very popular with expats and tourists. Most are either American-style bars or European watering holes, with the selection of draught beers and foods on sale usually reflecting the adopted theme (and more often than not the nationality of the owner). They usually close between midnight and 01:00, and many have live music and pool tables. The perfect prelude to a big night out, many hotels here have upscale bars perfect for warm-up cocktails. These include the Westin Grande, Dream and Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit.

Bangkok's nightlife has a reputation for being wild and rowdy. But at the same time, it's relaxed, safe and enjoyable. Rapidly establishing itself as Asia's capital of cool, Bangkok's diverse nightlife scenes feature everything from excellent live music, to good jazz clubs, ultra cool bars, exuberant dance venues and great restaurants, and go far beyond its once upon a time sleazy and naughty image. Get ready to explore and you'll be surprised at the abundance of things to do after night falls! Most spots are easily accessible by either BTS (Skytrain) or MRT (Underground).

Clubbers flock to Sukhumvit's sois. Hip beats, architectural flair and good-looking international crowds converge at clubs like Bed Supperclub (Soi 11), Q Bar (Soi 11) and Glow among others. To match the world-class venue design they often fly in top DJ'ing talent. Those eager to see how the fresh-faced Thai nouveau riche like to get down, should head a little further out to the voguish sois of Thonglor (Soi 55) and Ekkamai (Soi 63). These neighborhoods have seen a severe outbreak of hip in recent years, with clubs and bars like Santika, Escobar and Ice jumping every night to hip-hop and Thai hits.

Siam - is unquestionably the centre of shopping and entertainment in Bangkok. The area connects to other important shopping centres, such as MBK Center, Siam Discovery Center, Siam Center, and Siam Paragon. Within Siam Square itself, there is a wide range of shops and services, including restaurants, cafe's, designer clothing boutiques, record stores, cinemas, bookshops, hotels and banks.

Patpong - One of the world's most (in)famous red-light districts, Patpong is where it all started (Thailand's Go-Go culture) and has even been immortalised in a James Bond chase-sequence. Its two parallel side-streets, found between Silom and Surawongse Roads, house around 100 neon-lit strip bars offering risque sex shows, pole-dancers and the world famous ladyboys. But while for men Patpong is likely to mean 'adult', for women, families and the kids Patpong definitely means 'market'. At night this teems with hawkers and humble stalls selling a host of tourist gifts.

Soi Cowboy - Named after the retired, cowboy hat-wearing American who opened the first bar here in the early 1970s, this short street of around 40 bars has a more laid-back, Wild West feel to it compared to other areas, but still rocks to some old favourites.

Shopping in Bangkok

Bangkok is a shopaholic's paradise! Explore the city's shopping grounds and discover a wealth of modern, multi-storied shopping malls. From the legendary Mah Boon Krong (MBK), to the sophisticated Emporium, the trendy Siam Discovery or the new spectacular Siam Paragon, Bangkok accommodates everybody's taste, pocket and style. Here's where you'll find the city's fashion stores, book shops, accessories stands and designer lifestyle goods.

Not only are you spoiled for choice; it's all super easy! Shopping malls are modern and air-conditioned, thus a pleasant alternative to the bustling hot markets, and most complexes are easily accessible via the city's modern and efficient Skytrain system.

Head for areas with a local reputation for good shopping and, or bargains. Chinatown, around Sampeng Lane; Pahurat cloth market; Pratunam Market for ready-to-wear clothing; Suan Lum Night Bazaar for gift items; Sukhumvit Road for antiques and handicraft shops. Siam - shopping malls and funky clothes and the huge weekend market at Chatuchak on the outskirts of town.
