Getting around New York

New York has one of the world's best 24 hour transportation systems serving a city spread over five boroughs-Manhattan, Brooklyn, The Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island. A MetroCard is the most convenient way of paying to get around the city (and the only way to enter a subway station). They can be purchased at any subway station, from either automated machines or attendants, at more than 3,500 locations around the city, and at NYC's Official Visitor Information Center.

Subways

The cheap, airconditioned public subway is the easiest and quickest way to travel up and down four of the five boroughs. (To reach Staten Island, take the subway to the Staten Island Ferry or the MTA Staten Island Railway which operates 24 hours a day. A single subway ride is$2 payable by MetroCard. For $2 riders can use the system citywide and transfer as many times as needed, as long as they don't exit the system through a turnstile. Subways run 24/7 and stations are generally 8 to 10 blocks apart. Free foldout subway maps can be obtained from booth attendants or any NYC Official Visitor Information Center. Maps are also posted at stations and in each subway car or can be downloaded from hopstop.com. Although the subway is generally safe these days it should still be avoided late at night (after 2300).

Buses

Public buses are a great scenic option for travelling around the city. A single bus ride is $2 (transfers are free) payable by MetroCard or exact change (no dollar bills or pennies). Buses operate 24/7 and stop at street corners about every 2 blocks. Look for signposts marked with a bus emblem and route number, which also shows schedules and maps.

Taxis

No trip to New York is complete without a ride in one of the city's famous yellow cabs which will take you directly to your desired destination. Taxis have a minimum fare of $2.50 and cash and credit cards are accepted by all drivers. Tolls are always extra. A tip of 20% should be included if you were happy with the service. Taxis are available 24/7. Hail one with the white number illuminated on top and board and exit curbside. (A $1 tip is customary when hotel doormen assist in hailing a cab).
