Explore MorePercival Lowell established his observatory on May 28, 1894, initially to study Mars and the possibility of intelligent life there. It was here that Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto in 1930 and V.M. Slipher first detected the expanding nature of the universe nearly two decades earlier.
24” Clark Refractor Telescope
The 24” (0.6m) Clark Refractor was built in 1896 by Alvan Clark & Sons and is still used today for public observing at Lowell Observatory. This storied telescope was used to find the first evidence that our universe is expanding and to map the Moon in the 1960s in preparation for the Apollo Moon landings.
Pluto Discovery Telescope
The 13" (0.3m) Lawrence Lowell Telescope was the instrument that Clyde Tombaugh used to discover the dwarf planet Pluto in 1930, and so it is also called the Pluto Discovery Telescope. After two unsuccessful searches for "Planet X" by Percival Lowell himself, this telescope was built to conduct a third search, resulting in the discovery of Pluto on February 18, 1930.
Giovale Open Deck Observatory (GODO)
The Giovale Open Deck Observatory opened in October 2019 and is a public observing plaza that is unique in the world. The GODO features six advanced telescopes, one of which is a red steampunk refractor that gives amazing views of the planets.
