Yosemite and Carmel Travel Information
Yosemite
Getting to Yosemite There are 4 entrances to Yosemite National Park, all of which go through Mariposa County. The South Entrance is on CA41, 64 miles north of Fresno; Arch Rock Entrance is on CA140, 75 miles northeast of Merced; Big Oak Flat Entrance is on CA120, 88 miles from Manteca; and Tioga Pass Entrance is on highway 120, 10 miles west of Lee Vining
The park is open year-round. However, the Tioga, Glacier Point, and Mariposa Grove roads are closed from October/November through May/June due to snow. Other roads may close temporarily due to heavy snow, rockslides or road repairs.
Getting In The park's general entrance fee is $20 per car. This is valid for unlimited entries to Yosemite for seven days, and includes all occupants of the car. Passes can be obtained from the park entrance station.
Getting Around - Driving: Your best bet is to arrive early and leave late. Even on the busiest driving days in Yosemite Valley, traffic doesn't build up until 9 or 10 a.m. and then subsides at 6 or 7 p.m. Take advantage of the quiet times to get in and out of the valley, and take advantage of alternative transportation while you are there.
Getting Around - Ride the Shuttle Bus: There are many shuttle bus routes available to Yosemite Park visitors. Park your car in a large, day-use lot and commute easily without having to worry about traffic or multiple parking changes. Once in the park, you can easily find a shuttle bus map. You can also download one from the National Park Service website. Or check YARTS shuttle service, along CA Highway 140, into the park.
Getting Around - Ride a Bicycle: Biking is one of the best and most fun ways to get around the valley floor, especially during busier summer months. Twelve miles of paved bike trails allow traffic-free travel to most places within the eastern end of Yosemite Valley. Bicycle rentals are available at the Curry Village Recreation Centre and at the Yosemite Lodge Bike Stand, weather conditions permitting.
Carmel
Carmel California is on the Pacific Coast of Central California, just South of Monterey Bay. The closest airport with direct flights from the UK is San Francisco (SFO) 120 miles north of Carmel.
The easiest way to experience Carmel is on foot, so you can enjoy the variety of shops and sights this seaside town has to offer. However, if you wish to explore the surrounding area then car hire is recommended.
