Hanoi – Ha Long Bay – Ninh Binh – Danang – Hoi An – Hue – Ho Chi Minh City – Mekong Delta

Day 1: Hanoi – Arrival

Arrive in Hanoi and transfer to the hotel. The rest of the morning is free. In the afternoon, take a one-hour cyclo ride through the old quarter to enjoy Hanoi’s beautiful late-afternoon colours and to visit a traditional Vietnamese “long house”.

Day 2: Hanoi – Sightseeing

A full day to explore Hanoi’s illustrious history. In the morning, visit the Ho Chi Minh Complex containing his mausoleum, former residence and the One Pillar Pagoda. Also visit the Temple of Literature. In the afternoon, visit the Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts, Hoan Kiem Lake, Ngoc Son Temple and the 36 streets of the Old Quarter.

Day 3: Hanoi – Ha Long Bay

Drive to Ha Long Bay. Board a refurbished wooden sailing junk for a cruise through the hundreds of islets of Ha Long Bay. Enjoy a seafood lunch and a swim (weather permitting). Afternoon visit to a grotto before dropping anchor for the night on Ha Long bay.

Day 4: Ha Long Bay – Boat Cruise – Water Puppetry – Ninh Binh

Spend the morning cruising through the limestone cliffs and emerald waters of Ha Long Bay before arriving back at the wharf. In the afternoon, proceed through picturesque scenes of rice fields and rural life to a small village known as the birthplace of water puppetry in the Red River Delta. Witness the unique spectacle of an outdoor water puppet show while sampling local delicacies. Later, launch lanterns into the afternoon sky for good luck. Proceed to Ninh Binh for overnight.

Day 5: Ninh Binh – Sightseeing – Hanoi

Drive to Van Long and on arrival enjoy a panoramic bicycle ride taking in paddy fields, pagodas, small villages and a village market. Next stop, Vuon Thi village to interact with the local people and participate in the activities of daily life. Discover the lifestyle, hospitality and friendliness of the local people. Experience preparing lunch with a local family and then join them for a feast to remember. After lunch, stroll around the village and discover the traditional techniques used for growing rice and the local fishing methods. Even roll up the sleeves and join the farmers in the fields! Later on, experience the dramatic soaring limestone cliffs on a peaceful river boat cruise. Back to Hanoi in the late afternoon.

Day 6: Hanoi – Danang – Hoi An – Sightseeing

Morning flight to the central coast city of Danang. On arrival, travel to the ancient port town of Hoi An. Visit Danang’s Cham Museum enroute, home to the world’s finest collection of Cham artwork. On arrival in Hoi An, embark on a half-day walking tour of this charming old town. Visit ancient merchant’s houses, a Hokkien temple, a 400-year-old Japanese Covered Bridge and the colourful riverside market. Trip to one of Hoi An’s famous lantern workshops. Learn how the lanterns are made and have the opportunity to create your own. Enjoy a candlelit dinner set in a vegetable garden at Tra Que Village. Appetizers are popular finger foods such as marinated beef with fresh mustard leaves from the garden, accompanied by local wine from the family’s wine collection. For those not confident enough to try the local wine, cocktails will be available. Then enjoy delicious Hoi An specialties cooked by the family’s chef. Before leaving, enjoy a relaxing foot treatment using a local home grown remedy.

Day 7: Hoi An – Thanh Ha – Hue – Sightseeing

Morning boat cruise to Thanh Ha pottery village and a visit to a traditional ceramics workshop. Enjoy the chance to “get dirty” making your own creation. Depart Hoi An for the ancient capital of Hue. The three-hour drive hugs the ocean coastline, winds through emerald-green paddy fields and climbs up and over the stunning Hai Van Mountain pass. On arrival in Hue, visit the elaborate tomb of Emperor Tu Duc before transferring to the hotel.

Day 8: Hue – Sightseeing

Morning boat cruise on the romantic Perfume River to visit the elegant Thien Mu Pagoda on the riverbank and continue by car to the elaborate tomb of Emperor Minh Mang. In the afternoon, visit the Imperial Citadel and Dong Ba market. The spectacular Citadel is built on the same principles and design as Beijing's Forbidden City and contains a series of palaces, ornate halls, libraries, residences and colleges. In the evening, dine at Tha Om Garden House situated in the Nha Ruong's Hue Garden with lotus ponds and trees.

Day 9: Hue – Ho Chi Minh City – Sightseeing

Morning transfer to airport for flight to Ho Chi Minh City. On arrival, transfer to the hotel. In the afternoon, a half-day city tour including the Reunification Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral, Central Post Office, Chinatown, Binh Tay Market and Thien Hau Temple.

Day 10: Ho Chi Minh City – Cu Chi Tunnels – Musical Repertoire

Drive to the remarkable Cu Chi tunnels outside Ho Chi Minh City. During the war “Viet Cong” guerrillas built this labyrinth of narrow tunnels, using them to hide in during bombing raids and as a base to launch surprise attacks. In the afternoon, visit a family of local musicians. Learn about traditional Vietnamese instruments through conversations with the artists and hear performances from each family member. Take the opportunity to try the instruments – a memorable if somewhat noisy experience!

Day 11: Ho Chi Minh City – Ben Tre Homestay

Depart Ho Chi Minh City for the Mekong Delta. At My Tho, take a boat cruise along the river and a short walk to visit a handicraft workshop making products from coconut palms. Experience a horse-drawn cart ride to visit a local house to enjoy tea and taste some of the tropical fruits grown in the region. Float on a sampan through the narrow, tree-lined canals of the Mekong Delta. After lunch, visit a family-run business making coconut candies before cruising to Phu Tuc village. On arrival, take part in some local activities such as visiting the orchard and fishing in a pond, then stroll to neighbouring villages to interact with the locals. Experience preparing dinner under the guidance of the hosts. Enjoy a short Mekong traditional music performance before having dinner. Spend the night in a local house in Ben Tre.

Day 12: Ben Tre – Cai Be Bartering – Ho Chi Minh City

Drive to Cai Be and take a boat to the floating market to practice the age-old art of bartering. Use the sweets, sugar, milk, etc. that are supplied to barter for different kinds of local fruits and produce. The trip includes a visit to an ancient Delta house and a family-run business producing a local version of popcorn. Return to Ho Chi Minh City.

Day 13: Ho Chi Minh City – Departure
