Vietnam general information
Location
Vietnam is located in South-East Asia. It is bordered by China to the north and Laos and Cambodia to the west. The South China Sea lies to the east and south.
Language
Vietnamese is the official language. English has now replaced French and Russian as the most widely spoken and studied foreign language and is widely used in major cities.
Religion
85% of the population are Buddhist. Other religions include Catholicism, Protestantism, Confucianism, Taoism, Islam, Hinduism and Caodaism.
Culture
Vietnam has a population of around 80 million of which 85% are ethnic Vietnamese or 'Kinh'. The remainder is comprised of over 60 ethnic minority peoples living rural and agricultural lifestyles in the mountainous regions of central and northern Vietnam.
The Vietnamese are a friendly and optimistic people. They embrace tourism and the boost it has given their economy. Indeed, most visitors cite the genuine hospitality and affection of the Vietnamese people as the most pleasing aspect of their trip.
Tipping
Tipping is not customary in Vietnam, but it is greatly appreciated.
Festivals and Holidays
The most important holiday for the Vietnamese is Tet, the Lunar new year, which is usually in February and lasts for five days. Be aware that virtually all businesses are closed during this period and international and domestic flights are fully booked by Vietnamese returning to visit their families and friends.
