At an elevation of 7,000 feet (2,134 meters), amid the world’s largest contiguous Ponderosa pine forest, Flagstaff is a four-season hub of activity where an eclectic mix of small-town charm and endless outdoor adventure beckons. Echo's of a rugged pioneer past blend with modern-day innovation to create a destination full of activities to keep visitors busy both inside and out.
Rich with excitement and alive with cultural diversity, beauty and history, visitors worldwide are attracted to the clean mountain air, year-round outdoor recreation, lively festivals and authentic historic charm.
Flagstaff is the gateway to the Grand Canyon, making a fun-filled day trip to this geologic wonder easy and convenient. Seeing it in a movie is one thing, but the breathtaking beauty that rushes at you when you peer over the edge is entirely something different. Grab the camera and explore this majestic canyon from every angle
Flagstaff is the world’s first International Dark Sky City, a designation Lowell Observatory has been taking advantage of for more than a century. The discovery of Pluto is just one feather in Lowell’s astronomical cap, highlighting a storied history and a bright future of scientific research. Visitors can lift their gazes upward alongside the researchers, taking in distant stars, planets, and galaxies from both modern equipment and some of the original telescopes that are still in working order today.

Explore MoreJourney through Arizona on your way to Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah. Traversing the towering walls of the Virgin River Gorge, which connects the Southwestern rim of the Colorado Plateau and the North-eastern edge of the Mojave Desert, is a true hidden gem along the route to Bryce Canyon. The natural amphitheatre of Bryce features stunning rock pinnacles, called “hoodoos”, which are formed by wind and water erosion and transcend 2000 feet of elevation as well as vibrant sandstone colours that are a photographer’s dream! The stunning views are only matched by its ruggedness, and as Ebenezer Bryce once said, Bryce Canyon is "A hell of a place to lose a cow." During your full day tour, you will be treated to amazing panoramic views of the famous “hoodoos” and 100-mile vistas across Escalante Grand Staircase National Monument.

Explore MorePercival Lowell established his observatory on May 28, 1894, initially to study Mars and the possibility of intelligent life there. It was here that Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto in 1930 and V.M. Slipher first detected the expanding nature of the universe nearly two decades earlier.
24” Clark Refractor Telescope
The 24” (0.6m) Clark Refractor was built in 1896 by Alvan Clark & Sons and is still used today for public observing at Lowell Observatory. This storied telescope was used to find the first evidence that our universe is expanding and to map the Moon in the 1960s in preparation for the Apollo Moon landings.
Pluto Discovery Telescope
The 13" (0.3m) Lawrence Lowell Telescope was the instrument that Clyde Tombaugh used to discover the dwarf planet Pluto in 1930, and so it is also called the Pluto Discovery Telescope. After two unsuccessful searches for "Planet X" by Percival Lowell himself, this telescope was built to conduct a third search, resulting in the discovery of Pluto on February 18, 1930.
Giovale Open Deck Observatory (GODO)
The Giovale Open Deck Observatory opened in October 2019 and is a public observing plaza that is unique in the world. The GODO features six advanced telescopes, one of which is a red steampunk refractor that gives amazing views of the planets.
