Experience the music of the south as you explore Alabama, a land rich in history, awe-inspiring scenery, sun-drenched beaches, vibrant cities, and the mountains of the Appalachia. Alabama is within easy driving distance of Atlanta, Nashville, Memphis, and New Orleans but with a flavour of its own.
No wonder that Lynyrd Skynyrd was inspired to write the hit song ‘Sweet Home Alabama’, one of the best examples of Southern rock, as a tribute to this wonderful state which epitomises the easy going, laid back way of life long associated with the Deep South.
Other international superstars like Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding and The Rolling Stones all came to Muscle Shoals, a small southern town on the banks of the Tennessee River to record hit songs. Native Alabamian Sam Phillips discovered Elvis and the contract between Sam Phillips and RCA located in the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in nearby Tuscumbia. Hank Williams, the ‘King of Country Music’ and W.C.Handy, the ‘Father of the Blues’ were both born in Alabama and singer and songwriter Jimmy Buffett grew up here.
This musical heritage is celebrated across the state with countless live music venues in every town and a number of festivals including the Big Spring Jam in Huntsville, the W.C.Handy Festival in Muscle Shoals and the Hank Williams Festival in Montgomery.

Explore MoreThe Shoals, defined as the area comprising Florence, Muscle Shoals, Tuscumbia and Sheffield, is home to Helen Keller, famous fashion icons and a house designed by America’s most famous architect, but music is what makes The Shoals a must-see destination. Actor/musician Kiefer Sutherland, who recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in May 2017, explains it best: “If you’re into something like auto racing, you go to the Indy 500. If you’re into music, this is an absolutely necessary destination.”

Explore MoreEqually serious about having a good time as having an economic backbone, Mobile embraces its port location. The harbor bustles with industry and cruise ships; a little more than 300 years ago, it provided a safe place for the French to eventually settle. Their influence in Alabama’s oldest city remains, notably during North America’s original Mardi Gras carnival (1703, should anyone ask), when floats roll down parade routes and the past is preserved in exquisite costumes. A celebratory spirit lingers year-round, hanging out in seafood restaurants and whispering through the leafy oaks shading antebellum homes. Another bonus: the waterfront city won’t break the bank. Travel site Trivago lists Mobile among its 17 Best Value Destinations.
