Sri Lanka’s Capital Colombo, a port city, with a rich colonial heritage, is a potpourri of races, religions and cultures. Colombo displays some of the best the country has to offer. The city boasts large mansions, lush gardens, fine dining options, shopping malls packed with expensive designer brands. With many boutiques filled with international brands and local art and fabrics Colombo is the best place to do the last-minute shopping and then it’s best to retire to Galle face, Colombo’s playground for some Kottu or Wade.

Sri Lanka’s second largest city, Kandy, is famed for not only its history, artefacts and temples, but also for its tea, its stunning scenery and lush botanical gardens. The most visited site within bustling Kandy is the famed Buddhist Temple of the Tooth, home to the tooth relic, said to be a piece of Buddha himself. There are also a number of temples including the Lankatilaka Temple and the Gadaladeniya Temple as well as some beautiful gardens such as the Royal Botanical Gardens. Surrounding Kandy are rolling tea plantations and mountainous thickly forested hills that offer fantastic walking and hiking opportunities.

Nuwara Eliya is a city in the tea country hills of central Sri Lanka. Charmingly known as “Little England” due to its British settlers which brought Sri Lanka’s tea industry, this colonial region is naturally landscaped with botanical gardens and well-tended hedgerows.

Situated in Sri Lanka’s south-east hugging the panoramic Indian Ocean, Yala was designated a wildlife sanctuary in 1900 and was designated a national park in 1938. Ironically, the park was initially used as a hunting ground for the elite under British rule. Yala is home to 44 varieties of mammal and 215 bird species. Among its more famous residents are the world’s biggest concentration of leopards, majestic elephants, sloth bears, sambars, jackals, spotted dear, peacocks, and crocodiles. The best time to visit Yala is between February and July when the water levels of the park are quite low, bringing animals into the open.

Beruwala and Bentota are popular exotic beaches along the Colombo- Galle road located about 65km from Colombo. The Bentota lagoon stretches parallel to the beach adding a vista of tranquillity, with its tropical greenery and islets rich in bird life. Beruwala and Bentota are havens to tourists with accommodation to suit every budget, a range of Ayurveda treatments, and an array of water sports leaving the adventurer spoilt for choice! This tourist destination offers you water skiing on the rivers or estuaries, snorkelling, scuba diving, wind surfing, parasailing, fishing and a host of other activities to suit your mood.
