Measuring under 50 square miles and with a population less than a million, San Francisco still ranks as one of the greatest cities in the world. This Bucket List city has it all, iconic landmarks such as Golden Gate Bridge, historic cable cars, a world-renowned symphony, ballet, theatre and opera, dynamic waterfront, fabulous cuisine, and numerous outdoor adventures.

San Francisco is remarkable easy to travel around. With the underground BART metro system from San Francisco International Airport to within and beyond the city, or the beloved, iconic cable cars between Union Square and the waterfront, this hilly city is easily navigated. Historic streetcars run along Embarcadero, stopping off at Fisherman’s Wharf with its famous Pier and amazing seafood restaurants. Take in the view across the water of legendary Alcatraz Island, but book early if you want to visit.

If it is shopping you want head to the bustling plazas of Union Square and Ghirardelli Square, great dining options here also. Other distinct neighbourhoods worth visiting are the Haight-Ashbury for Alamo Square Park to see The Painted Ladies and where flower power blossomed in the 1960’s, Chinatown for great cuisine and gifts, North Beach for fantastic Italian restaurants and bars, Nob Hill for landmark architecture and stunning views. North of Nob Hill lies Russian Hill, where you’ll find icons like Lombard St., a.k.a. “the World’s Crookedest Street,” along with pockets of restaurants and boutiques on charming, tree-lined streets.
